HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Gov. Tom Wolf wants the man who’s led the Pennsylvania National Guard since January to hold the position on a permanent basis.

The Democratic governor on Thursday announced he was nominating Brig. Gen. Tony Carrelli to be adjutant general and lead the Guard and the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

Carrelli has been interim adjutant general since James Joseph took a paid leave of absence before resigning in March.

Carrelli is a graduate of the Air Force Academy who has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. He’s commanded the Pennsylvania Air National Guard and been a top adviser about air operations.

He joined the Guard in 1999 and has more than 4,500 flying hours in a variety of aircraft.

His nomination requires approval by the state Senate.
