PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh is celebrating its bicentennial nearly eight years after the city celebrated its 250th anniversary. What gives?

Friday is the 200th anniversary of Pittsburgh’s incorporation as a city.

The earlier anniversary, celebrated in October 2008, marked the anniversary of Pittsburgh’s founding in 1758. It didn’t become a city until 1816.

The city is commemorating Incorporation Day with an event in the City-County Building on Friday. Scores of other bicentennial commemorations will occur throughout the year.

On Thursday night, Mayor Bill Peduto dropped the ceremonial “first” puck at the Pittsburgh Penguins game against the Carolina Hurricanes to kick off the celebration.
