FORDSVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Police are investigating a fatal shooting in western Kentucky in which they believe a father intervened and shot a man who may have been assaulting his daughter.

A statement from Kentucky State Police says findings from the preliminary investigation suggest that 47-year-old Daniel R. Easterling was at the Ohio County home of 58-year-old James D. Rogers on Thursday evening and involved in a physical and verbal altercation with Rogers’ daughter.

Police say Rogers tried to intervene in the alleged assault, but he was unsuccessful and so he apparently retrieved a gun and fired one shot, striking Easterling. The Ohio County Coroner pronounced Easterling dead at the home in Fordsville.

An autopsy was scheduled on Friday in Louisville.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
