PILOT ROCK, Ore. (AP) - An eastern Oregon city has selected its first full-time police chief since 2014.

The East Oregonian reports (http://is.gd/dI0zhc ) that the Pilot Rock City Council on Tuesday decided to hold off on approving a contract with Bill Caldera, pending the outcome of a background check. Caldera would oversee police operations in the town of just over 1,500 residents south of Pendleton.

The council plans to vote on the contract at its March 15 meeting.

Caldera is retiring from the Pendleton Police Department in April after 29 years of service, where he has been the lieutenant and second-in-command for the last six years.
