SYDNEY (AP) - Substitute Milos Dimitrijevic scored an 88th-minute goal after threading his way through two defenders to give Sydney FC a 2-1 win over defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande on Wednesday in the Asian Champions League.

Sydney took the lead in the 17th minute when Guangzhou failed to clear a corner and Shane Smeltz headed it into the path of Robert Stambolziev, who volleyed in from close range.

Minutes later, Seb Ryall yanked Jackson Martinez to the turf by his shirt, earning a yellow card and conceding a penalty. Goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic saved Ricardo Goulart’s penalty attempt, but the equalizer came three minutes later from Huang Bowen.

“We’ve got a win over the richest club in Asia,” Dimitrijevic said. “Before the game, we said, ‘Let’s try to shock Asia to win this game,’ and we did it.”

The loss leaves Guangzhou, which has won the Asian Champions League title two out of the past three years, with only one point after two matches in Group H. Sydney FC has three points after losing to Urawa Reds in its opening match.

Also in Group H, Son Jun-ho scored the only goal as Pohang Steelers beat Urawa 1-0.

In Group G, Gamba Osaka and Melbourne Victory finished 1-1. Shu Kurata’s own-goal in the third minute gave first-place Melbourne an early lead but Gamba captain Yasuhito Endo equalized with a header in the 57th. In the other group game Wednesday, Shanghai SIPG had a 2-1 home win over Suwon Bluewings of South Korea.

In west Asian matches, Tractor Sazi of Iran took over first place in Group C with a 1-0 away win over Al Jazira of the United Arab Emirates. The Iranian side has six points, two more than Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal, which beat Pakhtador FK of Uzbekistan 4-1.

In Group D, Qatar’s Al-Jaish won its second consecutive game to move to the top of the standings after a 2-1 win over Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates.

In the other group match, Nasaf Qarshi of Uzbekistan had a 2-1 home win over last year’s finalists, Al-Ahli of Saudi Arabia.
