COURT CONSIDERS BID BY CONGRESSWOMAN TO THROW OUT MAP

A panel of three judges held a hearing Friday on whether to block the state from using new districts approved by the state Supreme Court last December. The new boundaries could result in the defeat of several incumbents.

FLORIDA GOV. SCOTT SIGNS ABORTION, MEDICAL MARIJUANA BILLS

The two were among 68 bills Scott signed into law on Friday. The abortion legislation (HB 1411) mirrors what is being challenged in court in other states including Texas. It prohibits state money for any service by an organization that also provides abortions. The medical marijuana bills (HB 307 and 1313) expand its use to terminal patients along with the possibility of adding more distributing organizations.

US REP. CORINNE BROWN ON FEDERAL INVESTIGATION: ‘I’M CLEAN’

During a tumultuous press conference on Friday, the Jacksonville Democrat said “I’m clean” after being asked multiple times about an ongoing investigation. The House Ethics Committee this week announced it has opened an investigation over a number of allegations, including “fraudulent activity” with an unnamed organization.

FLORIDA’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DIPS BELOW 5 PERCENT

The state’s employment agency announced Friday that unemployment in February was 4.9 percent, down 0.2 percent from the revised January rate of 5.1 percent. There were about 484,000 Floridians without jobs out of a labor force of 9,793,000.

POLICE: TERMINALLY ILL MAN DEAD AFTER SHOOTING AT HOME

Cape Coral police said in a statement that officers responded to the home Thursday evening following a report of a terminally ill man with a gun. When officers arrived, police say the man came outside and started shooting at officers. An officer returned fire and the man went back inside the house. Officers then heard a shot from inside the house. They found the man dead inside.
