A coroner ruled the death of an Indiana toddler who disappeared from her father’s home was a homicide by asphyxiation.

Owen County Coroner Stan Frank says an autopsy Friday confirmed that the body found by searcher Thursday night was that of 1-year-old Shaylyn Ammerman.

Police say Shaylyn’s body was found near a river near Gosport just a few miles from her father’s home in Spencer, where she was reported missing Wednesday morning.

Police have jailed a 22-year Spencer man on preliminary charges in connection with Shaylyn’s disappearance. Authorities say her death is still under investigation.

An Indiana sheriff says a 22-year-old man being held in connection with the disappearance of a 1-year-old girl isn’t talking.

Owen County Sheriff Leonard Sam Hobbs said Friday that there are still many unanswered questions in the case.

The Spencer man was arrested Thursday on preliminary charges of obstruction of justice, failure to report a dead body and unlawful disposition of a dead body. He’s jailed and hasn’t been formally charged.

Authorities found the body of a toddler that matches the description of Shaylyn Ammerman on Thursday night near the White River near Gosport, which is about 40 miles southwest of Indianapolis. She was last seen around midnight Tuesday at her father’s Spencer home.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday to determine the child’s identity and cause of death.

Authorities searching for a missing 1-year-old girl in Indiana found a body that matches her description and have taken a man into custody in connection with her disappearance.

Indiana State police spokesman Curt Durnil says the body, which matches the description of Shaylyn Ammerman, was found Thursday night near a river northeast of Gosport.

The Owen County coroner’s office will perform an autopsy Friday to establish the identity and cause of death.

Shaylyn disappeared from her father’s home in Spencer early Wednesday, prompting a search by more than 100 people including a search-and-rescue team and FBI agents.

Durnil says a 22-year-old Spencer man is being held in connection with her disappearance. He says investigators know the man was in the house the night Shaylyn went missing but don’t his exact role in the case.
