BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Voters in Burlington have approved a pilot project that would turn a busy section of North Avenue from four lanes to two, with a turning lane, bike lanes and new crosswalks.

Supporters of the project say they think it will improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers.

Voters in the New North End oppose the project, saying it will make traffic congestion worse. Many of those residents think city hall will make the project permanent without their input.

The Burlington Free Press reports (bfpne.ws/1RH8hTJ) that the city’s Public Works Department plans to start work on the project this spring.
