BARRE, Vt. (AP) - Students from 35 Vermont high schools will travel to the Barre Opera House this week to compete in a poetry recitation contest.

Participants in the 2016 Vermont Poetry Out Loud State Competition will recite classic and contemporary poetry from memory. Ten finalists will be chosen to participate in the state finals in Colchester on March 17. The winner of the state competition will travel to the national finals in May.

The national finals are May 3 and May 4 in Washington.

More than 5,400 Vermont high school students participated in classroom contests and winners proceeded to the next level.
