PAIGE, Texas (AP) - Investigators have cited 40 people for attending an illegal cockfight in Central Texas.

The Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office on Monday announced the crackdown on the cockfighting ring operating in the town of Paige, about 40 miles east of Austin.

Sheriff Terry Pickering says authorities are seeking the property owner in the animal cruelty investigation.

Deputies around midday Sunday responded to a noise complaint from a neighbor. Texas troopers and state game wardens also responded to help seize about 130 roosters and round up the suspects, who face charges of being spectators at a cockfight.

Officials say four roosters being used for cockfighting died as a result of their injuries. A judge later ordered the rest of the roosters to be euthanized.

Deputies impounded 32 vehicles at the scene.
