CLARENCE, N.Y. (AP) - State police say one of two dogs that broke through the ice on a western New York pond has died after being pulled from the water by troopers.

Trooper Troy Bullard of the state police dive team, responded around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday to an emergency call reporting two dogs had fallen through the ice on a pond in the Buffalo suburb of Clarence.

Trooper Brandon Serio held a safety rope attached to Bullard as he entered the water in a dry suit. Bullard was able to get one dog to shore before going back finding the other one under the ice.

The first dog survived and was returned to its owners, but the second dog died from its injuries.

Troopers say both dogs appear to be mixed breeds.
