EUREKA, Kan. (AP) - Authorities say a 7-year-old girl has died after being pulled from a river in southeastern Kansas.

The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at the Fall River Bridge on Tuesday afternoon.

The sheriff’s department says in a release that when crews arrived they found a man clinging to a log in the river below the low-water dam. A short time later, deputies located the girl, who was partially submerged.

Sheriff Rusty Bitler says two deputies entered the river, pulled the girl out and immediately began to try to resuscitate her.

Bitler says the child was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
