UTICA, N.Y. (AP) - Officials say one person is dead after a fire broke out a central New York home.

Fire officials in Utica say firefighters responded around 2:50 a.m. Thursday to a report of a blaze at a home where an elderly man lived.

Fire Chief Russell Brooks says the man was inside the home when the fire started. As firefighters battled the blaze, the second floor collapsed and crews had to pull out.

When they went back in, they found the man dead in his bed. Neighbors say the man was 96 years old. His name hasn’t been released.

Brooks says the victim was well-known and well-liked in his community.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
