LONDON (AP) - Mauricio Pochettino was rewarded Thursday for turning Tottenham into a genuine Premier League title contender by earning a new contract at the club through 2021.

Under the Argentine coach, Tottenham has become one of the most entertaining, high-scoring and hard-working teams in England, and was the biggest challenger to Leicester in the league this season.

A win over Newcastle on Sunday guarantees Tottenham second place, the club’s highest finish since 1963. The team is assured of being in the Champions League next season.

“We’ve seen Mauricio bring a tremendous spirit and ethos to our club and embrace the attacking style of play with which we have always been associated,” Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said. “He’s built a squad of youth and experience and this season we’ve seen football played at the highest level - quite sublime at times.”

The 44-year-old Pochettino, who joined from Southampton in 2014, is widely regarded as one of the best young coaches in Europe. He was pictured by British media meeting with former Alex Ferguson for lunch this week, heightening speculation that Manchester United could make a move for him.

However, Pochettino said two weeks ago that he had struck a verbal agreement with Spurs.

“We have enjoyed a great season and we believe this is just the beginning,” Pochettino said. “We have a long-term project and huge belief that we can achieve something big here for the future.

“This club has all the ingredients to continue to challenge at the very top in both the Premier League and in Europe.”

Tottenham is set to finish above north London rival Arsenal for the first time since 1995.

Pochettino’s backroom team has also agreed to contract extensions.
