BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio (AP) - The only animal shelter in western Ohio’s Logan County will close next month and is trying to find homes for dozens of dogs and cats before then.

Executive Director Barbara Faulkner says the Top of Ohio Pet Shelter needs nearly $20,000 per month to operate and doesn’t have the funding to keep going. It’s slated to close on June 9.

The facility in Bellefontaine (behl-FOWN’-tihn) also was the county’s Humane Society. County officials are considering how they’ll continue to provide housing for stray dogs, possibly working with an agency in a different county.

Faulkner says the shelter is offering reduced fees for more than 50 remaining dogs and more than a dozen cats up for adoption before it closes.
