HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A man has been convicted of taking the spear tip from the statue of King Kamehameha in September.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1TqS9Vj) jurors convicted William Roy Carroll III of theft and property damage Friday after a two-week trial.

Carroll had previously rejected a plea deal.

He could be sentenced to five years in prison.

Deputy Public Defender Patrick Munoz argued that the case against his client was built on incomplete circumstantial evidence.

Deputy Prosecutor Haaheo Kahoohalahala said Carroll stole a chain and used it to break off the spear tip. She argued Carroll hid the spear and didn’t intend to return it unless there was a reward.

Carroll remains in custody and is charged in a separate case.

The statue’s spear has been repaired.
