IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa City police chief is retiring after leading the department for over a decade.

City officials announced Monday that Police Chief Sam Hargadine will retire from the Iowa City Police Department at the end of June. He has accepted a position as the executive director of the Iowa Police Chief’s Association.

He was recently honored with the association’s Police Chief of the Year award. Hargadine has served as police chief since August 2005.

City officials say they’ve started the selection process, but there is no clear timeline on when an interim and permanent chief will be named.
