AIKEN, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 30-year-old passenger on a motorcycle has died after the bike hit a horse standing in the middle of Interstate 20.

Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said in a release that several horses apparently got loose from a farm near the Wire Road exit about 10 miles east of Aiken around 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

Carlton says the motorcycle hit one of the animals, and Chequita Burgess was thrown from the motorcycle and killed. The coroner says her husband who was driving the motorcycle did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

The coroner says the horse struck was also killed, while the remaining animals were rounded up. Authorities have not found the owner of the horses.

Carlton says Burgess and her husband were from Orangeburg and were heading to St. Louis.
