RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring is urging the Virginia Supreme Court not to expedite a lawsuit brought by Republican lawmakers over felons’ voting rights.

GOP leaders have asked the court to reverse an executive order issued by Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe that allows roughly 200,000 felons to vote in November. Republicans are urging the court to hold a special session to hear the matter or allow it to be heard when it meets for a session that starts June 6.

Herring said in a motion Friday that the administration doesn’t oppose a special session this summer, but it’s not reasonable to require them to prepare briefs and oral arguments by early June.

In a statement, McAuliffe said the court shouldn’t have to disrupt its calendar because of a “meritless lawsuit.”
