PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix high school student has been referred to juvenile court after he was found with a loaded gun in his backpack.

Phoenix police say officials at North Canyon High School were made aware of a student who possibly had a weapon Wednesday morning.

Police were called in and contacted the 17-year-old student, whose name hasn’t been released.

They say a handgun was found in a male student’s backpack and the school was briefly put on lockdown.

Police say student wasn’t threatening anyone with it but was detained for questioning.

They say he later was referred to juvenile court for a charge of interrupting an educational facility.
