SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. (AP) - Authorities say a 3-year-old Virginia boy taken by his father has been found safe.

Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office says an unknown person left 3-year-old Zion Williams at his paternal grandmother’s home midday Thursday. He says the boy is in good shape and has been reunited with his mother. Pearce says investigators soon tracked the boy’s father, 28-year-old Joshua Williams, to a Fredericksburg home and he surrendered.

The search began Wednesday night after Pearce says Joshua Williams beat the boy’s mother, then drove off with the boy.

Virginia State Police had warned that the boy was in “extreme danger.” Pearce said Williams had threatened to harm or kill the boy before.

Pearce says authorities have warrants charging Williams with abduction and felony malicious wounding.
