PHOENIX (AP) - A bill preventing local governments from banning short-term rentals on lodging websites like Airbnb has passed the Senate and is headed to Gov. Doug Ducey’s desk.

The proposal by Republican Sen. Debbie Lesko of Peoria also allows Airbnb and similar websites to collect taxes on behalf of renters and turn them over to the state. That should help the state collect taxes not now being collected.

Senate Bill 1350 passed on a 25-3 vote Friday.

Republican Sen. John Kavanagh of Fountain Hills says the provision barring cities and towns from regulating weekend rentals earned his no vote. He says homeowners should not have to endure with weekend rentals next door that turn into parties.

Ducey has championed the proposal.
