ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York will soon have a new state historian.

The Education Department says Devin Lander, executive director of the Museum Association of New York for two years, will take the post on May 19.

State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia announced the appointment.

Lander will join the department’s Office of Cultural Education at the State Museum.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in American history from the State University at Plattsburgh and a master’s degree in public history from the University at Albany.

He replaces former state historian Bob Weible, who retired.

The department says the state historian researches New York history, coordinates historical communities statewide and promotes collaboration, education and scholarship for greater understanding of the history of the state.

Lander previously was deputy legislative director for Assemblyman Steve Englebright.
