LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Latest on a trial that will determine whether media mogul Sumner Redstone is mentally competent (all times local):

4:45 p.m.

A judge says he will consider dismissing a claim by Sumner Redstone’s ex-girlfriend that the ailing media mogul was incompetent when he kicked her out of his life last year.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David J. Cowan said he found Redstone’s videotaped testimony compelling and there may be no need to hear additional evidence.

Cowan told attorneys to send him briefs laying out the state of evidence from Friday - the first day of trial - and he would consider a request by Redstone’s lawyers to dismiss the case Monday.

Herzer’s lawyer Pierce O’Donnell said he thought his side could demonstrate the need for the trial to continue.

A doctor who evaluated Sumner Redstone says he believes the ailing media mogul has dementia that renders him vulnerable to undue influence.

Dr. Stephen Read testified Friday as an expert witness for Manuela Herzer, Redstone’s former girlfriend, who was expelled from his life in October.

Attorneys for both sides said during opening statements in the mental competency case that the 92-year-old Redstone was being manipulated in the months before he threw Herzer out of his mansion, They disagreed on who was influencing him.

Redstone’s lawyers say he kicked Herzer out after he discovered she repeatedly lied to him. Herzer’s lawyers contend Redstone’s daughter, Shari, manipulated her father and his nursing staff to engineer Herzer’s ouster.

Redstone controls CBS Corp. and Viacom Inc.

A transcript of videotaped testimony by Sumner Redstone shows the ailing media mogul saying he wants an ex-companion out of his life.

Redstone’s testimony was released Friday at the start of a trial to determine his mental competency.

His statement about Manuela Herzer came in response to a question from Redstone’s attorney Robert Klieger about how he wants the trial to end.

Redstone also said he wanted his daughter, Shari, to make medical decisions for him.

Herzer’s attorney Pierce O’Donnell said in his opening statement that Redstone’s testimony appeared to be coached.

O’Donnell says Herzer is trying to have Redstone declared mentally incompetent to protect him from a circle of deceit around him.

Redstone controls Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp.

An attorney for Sumner Redstone says the ailing media mogul expelled his longtime companion from his life because she repeatedly lied to him.

Attorney Robert Klieger said Friday in opening statements of a mental competency trial that Redstone knew exactly what he was doing when he kicked Manuela Herzer out of his mansion in October.

Klieger says Herzer manipulated the 92-year-old Redstone, emotionally abused him and tried to keep anyone from getting close to him.

Herzer dated Redstone in the late 1990s and remained a confidant until late last year. She says she is trying to protect the mogul by having him declared incompetent.

She contends Redstone is being manipulated by his nurses at the behest of his daughter, Shari Redstone.

Redstone controls Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp.

An attorney for the ex-girlfriend of ailing media mogul Sumner Redstone says she is trying to have him declared mentally incompetent to protect him from a circle of deceit around him.

Attorney Pierce O’Donnell said Friday during his opening trial statement in Los Angeles that Manuela Herzer had a friendship with Redstone that transcended intimacy.

O’Donnell attacked Redstone’s daughter, Shari Redstone, of manipulating her father to remove Herzer from his life.

Herzer contends Redstone was manipulated into kicking her out of his home and life in October. O’Donnell says Herzer is trying to honor a promise she made to Redstone to care for and protect him.

The 92-year-old Redstone controls Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp.

A trial to determine the mental competency of media mogul Sumner Redstone is scheduled to begin Friday in Los Angeles.

Testimony is expected to begin with a closed session viewing of videotaped testimony solicited from Redstone at his home on Thursday.

Redstone, who suffers from a severe speech impediment, controls Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp.

A judge has said seeing and hearing from the 92-year-old Redstone is crucial to the case and his ruling on whether the mogul is capable of making decisions for himself.

The trial will focus on whether Redstone knowingly kicked out Manuela Herzer, a former girlfriend and longtime companion, from his mansion in October.

Herzer had been Redstone’s designated person to make medical decisions for him, but was replaced. Redstone’s lawyers say she repeatedly lied to him.
