CARDIFF, Wales (AP) - Wales coach Chris Coleman has ended Ched Evans‘ hopes of an immediate return to the squad after the striker was found not guilty of rape.

Evans made 13 appearances for Wales before he was convicted of rape in April 2012 and served 2½ years in prison before being released. His rape conviction was overturned in April following an appeal and he was acquitted on Oct. 14 after an eight-day retrial.

The 27-year-old Evans has resumed his career at third-tier English club Chesterfield and has scored four goals in 12 games this season.

Coleman says that “from a football perspective, a lot needs to happen” for Evans to get a recall because he needs to be “at least playing at the highest level and doing the business at the highest level.”
