ATMORE, Ala. (AP) - An apparent attempt to get cellphones and drugs into an Alabama prison ended in a chase and a fatal wreck.

Corrections officials say someone threw a package containing 25 cellphones, chargers and synthetic marijuana over a fence at Fountain prison near Atmore on Wednesday.

Authorities saw what happened, and investigators followed a vehicle away from the prison. The pursuit ended when the car collided with a sport-utility vehicle as it exited Interstate 65.

Prison officials say 36-year-old Clint Travis Hunley of Foley died in the car, which was driven by 26-year-old Jody Lynn Mikel of Trafford. They say Mikel is charged with reckless murder and faces additional charges related to the cellphones and drugs.

Court records aren’t yet available to show if Mikel has a defense lawyer.
