SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (AP) - Georgia’s week-long primitive weapons deer hunting season opens Saturday.

During the primitive weapons season, hunters can use archery equipment, muzzleloading shotguns 20 gauge and larger and muzzleloading firearms .44 caliber and larger. Those under 16 may use any legal deer firearm.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division says more than 45,500 hunters took advantage of the primitive weapons season last year and brought in about 9,000 deer.

State deer biologist Charlie Killmaster said, “The primitive weapons season is a great opportunity for an early deer before the pressure of rifle season hits.”
