RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - National environmental groups say they’re spending $3 million within the next three weeks on television and the internet with ads critical of North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr, who’s in a close race with Democratic challenger Deborah Ross.

The League of Conservation Voters and associated LCV Victory Fund announced Wednesday the commercials designed to highlight what they call Burr’s terrible record on environmental protections and clean energy legislation. The TV ad now running statewide also cites Burr’s campaign donations from the oil and energy sector and his stock portfolio, citing previous Senate financial disclosures.

The groups say their commercial will run on broadcast and cable through Election Day and in targeted spots online.

The league endorsed Ross last winter, before the March 15 primary.
