NEW ORLEANS (AP) - An Orleans Parish Sheriff’s deputy has been arrested after being accused of pepper-spraying an inmate who spit in his face following a disturbance.

The New Orleans Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/2dzoL4j) 30-year-old Deputy Jean Orphee of Gretna was arrested Monday on simple battery and malfeasance in office charges.

Investigators say Orphee was on duty Aug. 23 when there was a disturbance and 18-year-old inmate Kane Davis was taken to his cell. As his cell door was closing, investigators say Davis spit in Orphee’s face.

Authorities say video surveillance shows Orphee later returned and struck his arm through the food tray slot, spraying Davis with the pepper spray. Investigators say Davis returned again, hitting Davis with the spray another time.

It’s unclear why nearly two months passed between the incident and Orphee’s arrest.
