BAD AXE, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a 50-year-old inmate who died after being found unresponsive in her cell in May died of drug intoxication after apparently smuggling heroin into the Huron County Jail.

The sheriff’s department says in a statement that Nancy Bouchard died after ingesting an undetermined amount of the drug.

Bouchard was booked into the jail early on May 21 after being arrested by the Elkton Village Police Department on a weapons charge. She had breakfast and appeared to be sleeping through the morning, but was found unresponsive around midday.

During an autopsy, small packets of heroin wrapped in plastic were found hidden in a body cavity. WSGW-AM reports it’s believed that she died within minutes of ingesting the drug. The cause of death was “drug intoxication with heroin and amphetamine.”
