WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island officials have approved a proposed deal that would make Westerly Hospital part of the Connecticut-based Yale-New Haven Health System.

The state attorney general’s office and Department of Health approved the affiliation on Thursday. The transaction now awaits approval by the Connecticut Office of Healthcare Access.

The deal needs approval from Connecticut officials because Westerly Hospital is part of the New London-based L+M Healthcare. The proposed affiliation calls for L+M to remain Westerly Hospital’s corporate parent.

Under conditions imposed by the Rhode Island attorney general’s office, Westerly Hospital will keep its name but can still be identified as an affiliate of Yale-New Haven Health System.

L+M Healthcare acquired Westerly Hospital in 2013 after the hospital saw years of financial losses and went into receivership.
