Marmite, the salty and bitter breakfast spread, could have positive benefits for dementia sufferers, the Daily Mail reports.

Popular in the U.K. and Australia, where it’s known as Vegemite, the yeast extract spread is loaded with B12 — 100 times more than peanut butter — a vitamin beneficial in brain function.

Researchers found that for those who ate a small amount of Marmite for a month, their brains were “less excitable” to visual stimuli, a sign of a healthy mind.

“I supposed you could say it calmed the brain,” Dr. Daniel baker, a co-author of the study, told the Daily Mail. “… We think this is because the B12 vitamin in Marmite fuels production of GABA [gamma-aminobutyric acid]. We wanted to find a food that boosts the brain’s main neurotransmitter. Deficiencies in it have been linked with a host of neurological disorders.”

The researchers believe more studies of the effects of B12 could help prevent seizures in epilepsy and lead to a treatment for dementia.
