Summer may be waning as far as the calendar goes, but ongoing high temperatures throughout the capital region have had District-area residents continuing to grab for a cold one. The MGM National Harbor, located in Oxon Hill, Maryland, obliged thirsty beer connoisseurs Saturday afternoon with an event at the casino/hotel’s TAP Beer Festival.

Taking place at the MGM’s outdoor Potomac Plaza, TAP Beer Festival welcomed brewers both local and further afield for the event, which also included a team corn-hole competition, appetizers from TAP’s kitchen, live music as well as munching options on offer from the MGM’s ZiZi’s pizza restaurant. DJ Sixth Sense spun for the festivalgoers.

Jason Johnson, MGM National Harbor’s executive chef, called TAP a “luxury sports bar,” and thus a perfect venue for Saturday’s outdoor event. Joe Englese, chef at ZiZi’s, demonstrated how to knead dough into the base for an eventual pizza, and he even allowed me to take a crack at it.

Brewers displaying their wares at TAP Beer Festival included Jailbreak Brewing Company of Laurel Maryland, whose Jailbreak Dew Right, a honeydew blonde ale, offers a refreshing late-summer taste. Integral IPA from Port City in Alexandria, Virginia, boasts a citrusy aftertaste and a fruit-forward profile that works in conjunction with the hops. And with the official start of fall only six weeks away, Flying Dog Brewery of Frederick, Maryland, was on hand with their Dogtoberfest Marzen — a reminder that while the cold months are not far off, outstanding brews shall come with them.

Terrapin Beer Co. of Athens, Georgia, and Stone Brewing of Richmond, Virginia, were also pouring out samples.
