FLORIDA OFFICERS KILL MAN AFTER CONFRONTATION AT HOTEL

Keven Ernest Tree was killed on Thursday at a Holiday Inn Express in Ocala. Witnesses at the hotel said Tree had been threatening to kill himself with a gun before police shot him. Tree’s friend Laura Ferrier told the newspaper that he had health issues, and was living at the hotel because of a recent eviction.

POLICE: MOM, SON DIE AFTER SET ABLAZE BY ESTRANGED HUSBAND

Palm Bay police tell local news outlets that Daisy Tapia and her adult son, Erik Montes, died from their injuries Thursday. Edgard Fuentes faces murder, arson and burglary charges in their deaths. Police say Fuentes went to the home early that morning and poured gasoline throughout the house and started a fire that seriously burned his estranged wife and his stepson.

NESTING WOOD STORKS RETURN TO SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, FIRST TIME SINCE 2014

Wildlife officials are hopeful it’s a good sign for the declining population of wood storks in southwest Florida. This week, a crew in a survey plane spotted 40 to 50 active nests.

SEARCH FOR SUSPECT IN OFFICER SLAYING EXPANDS TO SMALL CITY

Authorities in a small central Florida city 40 miles southwest of Orlando are warning residents that a fugitive wanted for the fatal shooting of an Orlando police officer may be hiding in the area. The Haines City police posted on social media Friday that 41-year-old Markeith Loyd is believed to have family in the area. A reward of $100,000 is being offered for information that leads to his arrest.

PANTHER FOUND DEAD IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, FIRST OF 2017

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that the 3-month-old male cat’s body was found Thursday on County Road 832 in rural Hendry County. A total of 42 Florida panthers were found dead last year, with 34 road fatalities.
