MEDFORD, N.Y. (AP) - Police say an officer on Long Island has shot and wounded a driver suspected of drunken driving during a traffic stop.

It happened early Sunday morning when the driver fled in his vehicle, briefly dragging the officer, after being initially stopped in Patchogue.

Suffolk County police say the chase ended more than three miles later in Medford where the driver, identified as 34-year-old Michael Shear, of Holtsville, was shot once in the shoulder.

Shear was hospitalized in stable condition.

Police told Newsday (http://nwsdy.li/2jlhNDJ ) the driver did not comply with the officer’s commands and resisted arrest.

Shear was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless endangerment and fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle. It wasn’t clear if he had a lawyer.
