BLOOMINGDALE, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say a suburban Chicago police officer has died after crashing an SUV while responding to a call about a crime in progress at a business.

Police say 27-year-old Bloomingdale Officer Raymond Murrell was involved in a single-vehicle crash Thursday night. He was taken to a hospital and police say he was pronounced dead.

Bloomingdale police Chief Frank Giammarese says Murrell was on the force less than a year. Murrell’s fellow officers and local emergency crews responded to the crash involving the unmarked police SUV, which had emergency lights on at the time of the crash.

Giammarese says Murrell was “a shining star” with a bright future. He and another officer were recently recognized for saving a heart-attack victim.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
