PLACENTIA, Calif. (AP) - Orange County authorities say a man was arrested on suspicion of his ninth drunken-driving violation in 6 years after he crashed his car in Placentia.

Witnesses say the driver slammed into a power pole and tried to run from the scene Sunday night.

Placentia police Sgt. Adam Gloe says officers arrested Derek Stacy Haskayne on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Gloe says they soon discovered the 52-year-old had eight previous DUI convictions in Orange County since 2011. He was on probation for a prior felony DUI charge.

The Orange County Register reports (https://bit.ly/2jPZFBj) Sunday’s DUI is also considered a felony because of the number of prior offenses within the last 10 years.

Haskayne was held without bail. It wasn’t immediately known if he has a lawyer.
