LEXINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A dog has undergone surgery in North Carolina to remove a chain that was embedded in his neck that’s believed to have been placed on him when he was a puppy.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports the Davidson County Animal Shelter said the chain slowly cut into the dog’s neck until skin grew around it. Animal control officials are looking for the person responsible.

Figaro is believed to be nearly 1 year old. He was dropped off at a local vet’s office on Tuesday by a man who claimed the dog was a stray and had been found near N.C. Highway 109.

Mindy Faircloth, a volunteer with the Davidson County Animal Alliance, said Figaro will need at least one more surgery to remove the dead tissue and clear up the infection.
