Yesterday at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.
QUOTABLE
“Defense is 75 percent attitude and 25 percent technique. You’ve got to get a bunch of guys on the floor that want to stop people.”
— Maryland coach Gary Williams
KEY SHOT
Guard Jamon Gordon’s 15-footer gave Virginia Tech a 76-72 lead with 2:03 remaining to silence Maryland’s final run. The Hokies went on a 12-1 run to clinch the victory.
SEEN AND HEARD
GILCHRIST TARGETED: The fans focused on Terps guard John Gilchrist with frequent chants. The Hokies crowd always harasses Virginia natives playing for opponents, and Gilchrist is from Virginia Beach. Gilchrist ran by the Virginia Tech bench with one finger to his lips to signal hush after making one basket.
VERTIGO: Cassell Coliseum is the steepest arena around, with one tier that seemingly goes straight up. Comcast Center is similar behind one basket, but Cassell is that way all around, making capacity crowds of 10,000-plus seem even more imposing to visiting teams.
