Las Vegas NHL expansion team hires former Capitals boss George McPhee as GM

McPhee most recently served as special adviser to New York Islanders GM Garth Snow and before that spent 16 seasons as GM of the Washington Capitals. As the Capitals’ GM, McPhee oversaw a complete rebuild around star winger Alex Ovechkin that led to six consecutive playoff appearances before he was fired in 2014.

Overhaul continues for Toronto Maple Leafs with top pick in NHL draft

Toronto general manager Lou Lamoriello on Thursday said he’s going to keep everyone guessing — including the Arizona-born, 18-year-old Auston Matthews — until it’s time for the Maple Leafs to announce the selection Friday night at the NHL draft.

Patrick Kane wins the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP

Kane won the Hart Trophy on Wednesday night, becoming the first player born and trained in the U.S. to be named the NHL’s most valuable player.

NHL gambles on expansion franchise in Las Vegas

The NHL will expand to Las Vegas for the 2017-18 season after awarding its 31st franchise to billionaire businessman Bill Foley on Wednesday. The league’s board of governors met on a 109-degree day and voted to put an ice hockey team in the Mojave Desert’s gambling mecca.
