Israel is considering resuming its contentious practice of assassinating militant leaders in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip in an effort to halt intensified rocket attacks on Israel's south, according to defense officials.
A top Israeli politician is battling explosive charges of racism against a political rival, expressed in talks with a U.S. diplomat and exposed in a leaked U.S. Embassy classified cable.
"They'll find a replacement for Haniyeh very fast," he said.
Israel, which governed Gaza from 1967 until it withdrew 8,500 settlers and its soldiers in 2005, has other options before it reaches that point, Peretz said.
