    Cairo, Bedouin in power struggle

    In Egypt's restive Sinai, Bedouin leaders are pushing to take matters into their own hands and urging the government to arm their tribesmen by creating a local security force in the peninsula, where the state is struggling to impose its authority and uproot Islamic militants who have attacked Egyptian troops and neighboring Israel.

    2 Americans kidnapped in Egypt's Sinai are freed

    Two American tourists and their Egyptian guide who were abducted by a Bedouin in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula last week were released unharmed on Monday after negotiations with security officials and tribal leaders.

    Inside Israeli desert, standoff over land

    Decades of fraught relations between the Israeli government and Bedouin Arabs living in the hardscrabble Negev Desert are coming to a head over a state plan that would expel 30,000 of the nomads from unauthorized tent encampments and shantytowns and move them into some of the country's most destitute towns.
