Actor and equal rights advocate George Takei, whose portrayal of the "Star Trek" character Mr. Sulu in television and film has made him a science-fiction legend, is crossing a new frontier this week by appearing as himself in issue No. 6 of Archie Comics' "Kevin Keller," a series about Riverdale's only gay teenager.

After his debut in "Veronica" No. 202 caused Archie Comics to do a second printing for the first time in its history, the publisher is giving its first openly gay character his own mini-series this summer.

"Working on this issue was special on a number of levels _ the Ronald McDonald House is a very important charity and Archie has always been a huge supporter, so it was an honor to bring that relationship to life," he said. "Plus, it's Archie's 70th Anniversary Issue. It doesn't get cooler than that."
"We'll see Kevin getting involved at Riverdale High, his ongoing friendship with Veronica and the rest of the gang, and more background on who Kevin is and how he came to be," Mr. Parent said.
