We are taking immediate steps to enhance suicide-prevention protocols to include a comprehensive review of all suicide-prevention procedures. These will include mental-health assessments, assistance from the Justice Department's National Institute of Corrections, a joint behavioral health task force, and the review of lines of communication with other D.C. and criminal-justice agencies that may have contact with individuals prior to jail commitment. A larger issue to address is the number of mentally ill being housed in jails and prisons.
