Diana Damrau recalled when she learned the Metropolitan Opera's new production of "Rigoletto" would be set in the glitzy Rat Pack-era Las Vegas of 1960, not 16th-century Mantua.
The Bavarian State Opera steered clear of controversy with a popular new production of Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffmann." But two nights after its run ended, the company made up for it, reviving Calixto Bieito's radical reimagining of Beethoven's "Fidelio."
Damrau said the audience was distracted trying "to figure out which character came from which science-fiction movie," calling it "really unnecessary."
