    Unable to decide how to divvy up $9 billion a year, NFL owners and players put the country's most popular sport in limbo Friday by breaking off labor negotiations hours before their contract expired. The union decertified; the league imposed a lockout.

    Unable to decide how to divvy up $9 billion a year, NFL owners and players put the country's most popular sport in limbo Friday by breaking off labor negotiations hours before their contract expired.

    Players' union decertifies as talks break down

    NFL labor talks broke down just hours before the latest contract extension expired Friday. The union decertified, and players including Tom Brady and Peyton Manning sued the league, putting the country's most popular sport on a path to its first work stoppage since 1987.

    Union still wants more financial info from NFL

    The NFL and the players' union have wrapped up a 13th day at a federal mediator's office, and two key issues are how to split $9 billion in revenues and how much financial information the league will turn over.

    NFL, union talk 4 hours; plan to resume Tuesday

    Trying to work their way to a new labor deal, Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL Players Association head DeMaurice Smith resumed negotiations for four hours Monday.

    The NFL and the players' union negotiated for four hours Monday before calling it a day.

    The NFL and the players' union have left the federal mediator's office after a four-hour session.
