'Your papers, please' must never be heard in America

Randy Loughner was always reclusive, but since his son's alleged shooting rampage last month, the father has shut himself behind what one neighbor calls "an elaborate cage."

The parents of a man charged with trying to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords are devastated and guilt-ridden, a neighbor said, mourning their own tragedy as Tucson residents prepared Tuesday for a community memorial service and a visit from the president.
"He wants his privacy," Mr. Gayan, a widower, said. "I honor his request. I have no problem with that. People move out into the middle of the desert because they want their privacy."
Jared Loughner's father moved into the house as a bachelor and eventually got married, and the Loughners had Jared, longtime next-door neighbor George Gayan said.
