Charities and nonprofit organizations are worried that new limits on tax deductions for high earners will hurt donations just as charitable giving is starting to rebound from the depths of the recession.
The numbers are almost too large to fathom, so many Americans stop trying. As bodies pile up in disaster after global disaster, even the most sympathetic souls can turn away.
The extent of American generosity was shown yesterday when a report from the Giving USA Foundation estimated that charitable donations approached $300 billion for 2006.
