"The Artist" won best picture and three other prizes Saturday at the Spirit Awards honoring independent film, a possible prelude to a big night at the Academy Awards for the black-and-white silent movie.
Filmed as a silent movie (with a few notable sonic intrusions) and presented in black and white in the boxy 1:33 aspect ratio, "The Artist" pays tribute to the high style of silent film.
The silent movie "The Artist" and the doomsday drama "Take Shelter" led the Spirit Awards honoring independent film on Tuesday with five nominations each, including best picture.
