Facing a surge of right-wing extremism among fans, the soccer club Borussia Dortmund has long used social workers at games to defuse tense situations and help promote tolerance.
Such arguments gloss over the fact that Dortmund was facing insolvency as recently as 2005; "it was the edge of the cliff, you couldn't get any closer," Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said last week.
"The actions were despicable and represent an absolute taboo," Dortmund managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke said.
